The Whole Bible

My copy and paste feature doesn't keep the words that are supposed to be italicized, so instead of me doing it manually, refer to a Bible to see which words are italicized.

When studying topics in the Bible, it's always helpful to use a combination of verses instead of resting on one verse. An example of this is Matthew 7:7-8, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." When read by itself, we can conclude that if we ask God for anything, He will grant it to us.

However, that's not the case - James 1:6-8 says, "But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways." Matthew 7:7-8 is true for Christians, but if they doubt that they will receive what they are asking for, then James 1:6-8 comes into play. Also, God won't necessarily answer prayers that aren't according to His will - If you ask God to heal you and others, help you make the right decisions, and save people who are not Christians, etc., God will hear you. He won't necessarily answer prayers that aren't according to His will. First John 5:14 explains this, "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:" Another factor is if a Christian sins and doesn't ask God to forgive them for that sin, God will not answer their prayers until they have asked God to forgive them for saying something sinful, thinking something sinful, doing something sinful, desiring something sinful, or not saying or doing something the Holy Spirit urged them to say or do. Also, a Christian should ask God to forgive them for sinning in ways they didn’t realize they have sinned. Another point is described in Matthew 5:23-24, which teaches the necessity of apologizing to people we have sinned against. These concepts are taught in Psalm 66:18, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:”

So, using the whole Bible and comparing verses discussing different topics is very important.
