The All-Important Contrast

My copy and paste feature doesn't keep the words that are supposed to be italicized, so instead of me doing it manually, refer to a Bible to see which words are italicized.

John 1:12

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (When I read this, I see that if someone believes that Jesus is their Savior (believe on his name), they become a Christian.)

John 2:23-25

23Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. 24But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. (However, these people believed that Jesus was their Savior (believed in his name) but they didn't become Christians because they weren't truly willing to follow Jesus (live a lifestyle similar to the one explained in chapter 39 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com). They weren't willing to be committed to Jesus, and He did not commit Himself to them. Also, Notice 'believe on his name' in John 1:12 and 'believed in his name' in John 2:23.)

John 2:11

11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. (Unlike the people in the previous verses who believed Jesus was their Savior after they saw Jesus' miracles, Jesus' disciples (who had desires to follow Jesus, which was proved by their lifestyles throughout the New Testament) definitively concluded that Jesus was their Savior after Jesus turned water into wine. The result was that they became Christians.)

So, we can see that someone can believe Jesus is their Savior, but if they aren't consciously or unconsciously willing to begin following Jesus after they tell God that Jesus is their Savior, they won't become Christians.
