I used to think that Matthew 5:39 meant that you had to let someone pummel you and not fight back, but that's dealing with verbal abuse. Acts 22:25-29 gives an example of how Paul could have let the Romans beat him, but that was against the law. Also, Exodus 22:2-3 allows 'fighting back' when someone breaks into your home.
