In His Absence

At a certain time, Paul was going to be absent from the Philippians and wouldn't be able to give them instructions on how to live and what they were doing wrong. Therefore, he recorded these words in Philippians 2:12-13, "12Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

Just like in these verses, God wants people who have made decisions to become Christians know that they have really received Jesus as their Lord and Savior. They receive assurance of their salvation if they try very hard to obey what the Bible teaches because they love God and don't want to disappoint Him (with fear and trembling). Also, as this passage suggests, doing good works is a way to have assurance of salvation.

Verse 13 means that God gives Christians the desire and ability to live the ways that were just mentioned. In other words, He gives Christians the ability to live the way chapter 39 of this book explains - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com
