For Wednesday evening services, the Lord has lead me to do a Bible study for practical Bible verses in Matthew. Please come back to these Bible lessons in order to review them and learn them. Whenever we have learned the meaning of Bible verses and think about them throughout each day, we will be in perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3). Not only that, but when we are in a situation in our daily lives and are tempted to sin, we can think back to what we have learned from the Bible and say to ourselves, "The Bible says to not do what I am tempted to say, think, do, and/or desire right now, so I am going to refuse to give in to this temptation." This is what Romans 12:2 means, and it says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." This is also the pattern that Jesus used when the devil tempted Him to sin in Matthew 4:1-11.

Chapter 13

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW

Matthew 13:44-46

44Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

45Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: 46Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

These verses describe how extremely important making it to heaven is. Nothing else comes close to heaven's importance! Our life on earth is very short compared to eternity, and there's only two options - heaven or hell.

So when someone discovers this truth and realizes that it's possible to go to heaven, they are obviously excited. Someone can find a pearl of great price or a buried treasure with a bank statement assuring the finder of the treasure chest to recieve 100 billion dollars, but these things can't buy perfection for eternity. A person could almost literally buy anything in the world with that kind of money, but those things don't last forever (Matthew 6:19-20 say, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:"). Also, they aren't perfect; First Corinthians 2:9 reveals, "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him."

Besides the excitment of knowing that there is the possiblity of going to heaven, understanding how to make this happen makes it that much more encouraging - Instead of just believing that Jesus died on the cross for our sins so we can go heaven, we need to follow the instructions in Matthew 13:44-46. Like the man who sold all that he had to buy the field that had the treasure and the other man who sold all that he had in order to buy the pearl of great price, we must give up everything we have (These verses aren't referring to money.). Jesus' words in Mark 8:35-37 support this, "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" These verses mean we need to be consciously or unconsciously willing to let Jesus take over every area of our life and every moment of each day, and if we are willing to live this way for the rest of our life, we are ready to become a Christian by believing that Jesus died on the cross to erase our sins and let us into heaven. Chapters 1, and 4-9 of this book www.areyousureyouaresaved.com explain this in detail.
