What Is Lust?

Matthew 5:27-28 says, "27Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery (have sexual relations with someone other than your spouse): 28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." It seems that an unmarried Christian man or woman should avoid looking at and thinking about attractive women and men altogether, but the issue is coveting or wanting to have someone's wife, girlfriend, husband, or boyfriend. More particullary, they want to have them because they want to do sexual acts with them. More than likely, they also imagine having sexual relations and begin to plan how and when they will do this with them.

Despite these examples, I believe it is fine for a Christian man to purposefully enjoy looking at females, as long as they are confident that they would never even touch a woman. However, the downfall for this view is that a Christian man could become consumed with this and not have enough time to serve the Lord when the Holy Spirit gives him the thought to do so. This would also take a lot of self-control not to pursue sexual realtions.

With the right mindset, this can be a way to worship the Lord, instead of being sinful. Someone obeys Philippians 4:8 when they think about things such as a miracle they witnessed or heard of, someone who got saved, some act of kindness they saw or heard of, something amazing an athlete did because God gifted them with that ability, or imagine what will be going on in heaven when they get there, etc. Just how thinking about these things are thinking the way God wants us to think, someone can do the same by admiring females and thanking God for giving them such beauty. Females are one of God's most beautiful creations, and He doesn't mind a man thanking Him for it. Since all of this involves God, a person won't be guilty of idolatry. The exception of this is pornography, because it promotes and encourages sex before marriage (fornication).
