Luke 9:23-25

23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

From reading verse 23, it seems that denying yourself, taking up your cross daily (being willing to identify with Jesus no matter where you are or who you're with), and following Jesus (living a lifestyle similar to the one explained in chapter 39 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com ) is something you can do if you want to. But, the following two verses explain that those who refuse to live this way will lose their lives/themselves. Can you imagine someone telling Jesus after He said this that they don't want to live this way; they just want to believe that He is their Savior and take life easy? This is what many today want to do. The result is that they don't become Christians. We need to be consciously or unconsciously willing to begin living this way after we trust Jesus to erase our sins. This prepares our hearts to receive Jesus; having the other mindset clearly doesn't prepare our hearts.
