What Is Lust? 2

On July 3rd, I did a message called 'What Is Lust?', which now has some changes. So, please see that message as well.

The following are obvious sins -

1. Looking at naked pictures or videos. Habakkuk 2:15, "Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

2. Wishing that you had someone's wife, husband, girlfriend, or boyfriend because you want to do sexual acts with them (Matthew 5:27-28).

Someone can imagine doing sexual acts with others, but it doesn't become a sin until they literally do the acts. (James 1:13-15 says, "13Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.") Someone can imagine having sexual acts, as long as they know that they aren't going to try to do the sexual acts. Similarily, someone can imagine driving a race car on a track, but if their friend has a race car, they shouldn't wish that they had it. That would be coveting; they are wanting something that doesn't belong to them. The issue in Matthew 5:27-28 is wanting to have sex with someone's spouse. So, someone can imagine having sexual relations but not want to physically do those acts or try to find the person so they can do those acts. However, the downfall for this view is that a Christian could become consumed with this and not have enough time to serve the Lord when the Holy Spirit gives him the thought to do so. This would also take a lot of self-control not to pursue sexual realtions. The key is to combine James 1:13-15 with Matthew 5:27-28, and that's what we just did.

But, what about other verses? Galatians 5:19 says, "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery (physical sexual relations with someone other than your spouse), fornication (physical sexual relations before marriage), uncleanness (looking at or hearing something normal, but making it into something dirty and perverted. For example, a woman could ride a horse, and you would turn it into something perverted.), lasciviousness (having a strong desire to do sexual acts with someone other than the person you are married to, and this doesn't bother you)," As noted above, "Someone can imagine having sexual relations but not want to physically do those acts or try to find the person so they can do those acts."

Ephesians 5:3-5 states, "3But fornication (physical sexual relations before marriage), and all uncleanness (looking at or hearing something normal, but making it into something dirty and perverted. For example, a woman could ride a horse, and you would turn it into something perverted. This describes perverted thoughts, and verse 4 describes perverted talk. Both are sinful.), or covetousness (wanting to physically have sexual relations with someone other than your spouse), let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5For this ye know, that no whoremonger (See note for fornication in verse 3.), nor unclean person (See note for all uncleaness in verse 3.), nor covetous man (See note for covetousness in verse 3.), who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." Ephesians 5:3 says 'all uncleanness', and Galatians 5:19 just says 'uncleaness'. So, it seems that the words 'all uncleanness' in Ephesians 5:3 could include physically doing sexual acts with someone other than your spouse, because the word means that in Ephesians 4:19 and Romans 1:24. It doesn't include imagining sexual acts, because that would contridict the other verses that have been explained, especially the words 'or covetousness' that are listed directly after and James 1:13-15.

2 Corinthians 12:21, "And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed." (See note for Galatians 5:19.)

Colossians 3:5, "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection (imagining doing sexual acts and looking for opportunties and people to do those sexual acts with), evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry (Evil concupiscence is general evil thoughts, and since these verses are based on sexual sin, these thoughts become sinful when someone physically wants to do the sexual acts they think about (This describes the next word, which is covetousness.).):"

Ephesians 4:19, "Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness." (They weren't ashamed to have strong desires to do sexual acts with someone other than the person they were married to (if they were married), and they literally did sexual acts and craved for more.)

Romans 1:24, "Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:" (These were homosexuals who physically had sex with each other, but before they did that, they physically wanted to do so. This means they lusted, which was sinful.)

The word 'uncleanness' in Ephesians 4:19 and Romans 1:24 is referring to physically doing sexual acts, but the word in Ephesians 5:3 and Galatians 5:19 refers to perverted thoughts.
