For Sunday evening services, the Lord has lead me to do a Bible study for practical Bible verses in John. Please come back to these Bible lessons in order to review them and learn them. Whenever we have learned the meaning of Bible verses and think about them throughout each day, we will be in perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3). Not only that, but when we are in a situation in our daily lives and are tempted to sin, we can think back to what we have learned from the Bible and say to ourselves, "The Bible says not to do what I am tempted to say, think, do, and/or desire right now, so I am going to refuse to give in to this temptation." This is what Romans 12:2 means, and it says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." This is also the pattern that Jesus used when the devil tempted Him to sin in Matthew 4:1-11.

Chapter 3

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN

John 3:1-15

1There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again (become a Christian, and as a result, begin to live the way God wants us to live - see chapter 39 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com), he cannot see the kingdom of God. (We must become Christians if we are to make it to heaven one day. If you have not prayed or made a decision to become a Christian, please follow chapter 41 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com)

4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water (This could mean first being born physically into the world, or it symbolically represents someone being cleansed of their sins when they become a Christian. Nicodemus should have been familiar with Ezekiel 36:25-26, which says, "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.") and of the Spirit (This means becoming a Christian. When someone becomes a Christian, the Holy Spirit enters that person (Acts 10:43-48; Ephesians 1:13-14), he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. (When someone becomes a Christian, the Holy Spirit urges and gives them thoughts as to what God wants them to do each day. Like the wind blowing in different directions, Christians don't know where the Holy Spirit will lead them. The Holy Spirit may give them thoughts to do things such as witness to this person or that person. When these people become Christians or think about becoming Christians, they will know that they were led by the Spirit of God and are a son of God (Romans 8:14). Some other examples are when the Holy Spirit gives them thoughts and urges them to give money to someone in need, and they get back on their feet as a result. The Holy Spirit could also lead them to become someone's friend who isn't a Christian, and they later become a Christian because they saw how much Jesus has changed their life for the better.

(If you have asked Jesus into your heart, believed that Jesus is your Savior, or trusted Jesus' death on the cross and His shed blood to erase your sins and let you into heaven and believed He arose from the dead, etc., but the Holy Spirit hasn’t helped you in these ways, follow chapter 41 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com and become sure you are really a Christian.)

9Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 10Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. (Nicodemus should have understood that the Old Testament pointed to Jesus as the Messiah and that faith in Him was the Way to heaven. Salvation isn't obtained through keeping the Ten Commandments and the Law of Moses.) 12If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? 13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. (This is referring to Jesus.) 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (As punishment for the people of Israel complaining about God, God sent venomous snakes to bite them. However, if they were sorry for what they did and looked at the serpent on a pole that Moses built, they wouldn't die from their snake bites. Jesus used this example to compare it to when He would be lifted up on a cross in order to die for our sins. If we symbolically look at Jesus on the cross and are sorry for our sins and want God to forgive us and believe Jesus took the punishment we deserved, and after He was punished and died for our sins, we believe our sins were erased so we can go to heaven one day. To receive more explanations for this, see chapter 41 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com)
