For Sunday evening services, the Lord has lead me to do a Bible study for practical Bible verses in John. Please come back to these Bible lessons in order to review them and learn them. Whenever we have learned the meaning of Bible verses and think about them throughout each day, we will be in perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3). Not only that, but when we are in a situation in our daily lives and are tempted to sin, we can think back to what we have learned from the Bible and say to ourselves, "The Bible says not to do what I am tempted to say, think, do, and/or desire right now, so I am going to refuse to give in to this temptation." This is what Romans 12:2 means, and it says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." This is also the pattern that Jesus used when the devil tempted Him to sin in Matthew 4:1-11.

Chapter 13

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN

John 13:1-17

1Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; 3Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

5After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. 8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. (Peter already belonged to Jesus, but this symbolically represents that unless a person's sins are erased by Jesus' death on the cross (cleansed), they have no part with Him (isn't going to heaven).) 9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean (Peter, like all Christians, are clean (have their sins forgiven and erased) but still sin and should routinely ask God to forgive them when they do so and try to become stronger Christians over time (live a lifestyle similar to the one explained in chapter 39 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com). Philippians 3:12-14 explains this.), but not all. 11For he knew who should betray him (This is referring to Judas.); therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

12So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. 15For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

The disciples had the wrong idea about leadership. They argued among themselves as to who was the greatest (Luke 22:24). Jesus, who was by far the greatest in the room, washed their feet (In this time period, house hold servants washed the feet of guests when they arrived.) to teach them that true leaders don't think or act like they are more important than others; they are humble. Whenever someone needs help that Christians come across, they should try to help them (serve them). Luke 22:25-27 makes it clear that a truly great leader is one who serves others, not the other way around.
