For Sunday evening services, the Lord has lead me to do a Bible study for practical Bible verses in John. Please come back to these Bible lessons in order to review them and learn them. Whenever we have learned the meaning of Bible verses and think about them throughout each day, we will be in perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3). Not only that, but when we are in a situation in our daily lives and are tempted to sin, we can think back to what we have learned from the Bible and say to ourselves, "The Bible says not to do what I am tempted to say, think, do, and/or desire right now, so I am going to refuse to give in to this temptation." This is what Romans 12:2 means, and it says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." This is also the pattern that Jesus used when the devil tempted Him to sin in Matthew 4:1-11.

Chapter 1

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN

John 1:14-18

14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 15John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 18No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

People in the Old Testament had to obey the law of Moses and the Ten Commandments, but that didn't give them a future home in heaven. Those who recieved salvation understood that they couldn't keep the law perfectly, and they understood that prophecies pointed to a future Savior who was the Way to heaven. They needed a future Savior who would keep God's laws perfectly. When those people died, they went to a holding place (which was paradise), and the three days between Jesus' death on the cross and His resurrection, Jesus went to paradise and preached to the Old Testament believers who believed the prophecies that God would send a Savior. Jesus revealed that He was the long awaited Savior, and these Old Testament saints went to heaven. Ephesians 4:8-10 says, "8Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)"

The Ten Commandments show us that we fall short in meeting God's standards and requirements, and our only hope is to trust Jesus to save us by grace, because He met God's perfect requirements. We all deserve to pay the penalty for our sins against God (who is so holy, that He can’t even look at sin), but Jesus took the punishment we deserved and freely gave us His righteousness (as if we had never sinned) in exchange. Second Corinthians 5:21 declares, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
