Opening Prayer - Heavenly Father we thank you for the oppertunity to worship your Son this morning. We know that if He hadn't died on the cross for our sins and arose from the dead, we would have no way to have a future home in Heaven or the privilage of worshiping Him this morning. Please bless us indeed and give us the strength and wisdom to live the way the Bible says we should live. We pray that everyone who reads this sermon who are not saved will become saved before it is too late. For this Sunday morning service, we pray that You will help us to understand assurance of salvation and it's relationship with sin. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Can we know if we are a Christian if sin is in our life?

The Bible teaches that a Christian doesn't sin on purpose (1 John 3:4,6,8,9,10). Although, a Christian definitely will sin after they trust Jesus' death on the cross and His shed blood to erase their sins and let them into Heaven. The apostle Paul was a perfect example of this. Romans 7:14-25 proves this and it says, "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin." Like every true Christian, the apostle Paul's soul was redeemed by Jesus' shed blood on the cross (He was going to Heaven when he died.), but his soul was inside his body (Everyone's soul is inside their body.). However, the moment that Paul died, his soul went to Heaven, and his flesh or body (the sinful human nature which has been passed down to every human in history from Adam, with the exception of Jesus (see Luke 1:35)), was left on the earth. But while Paul was alive, his redeemed soul and his sinful flesh was in a constant battle. Since Paul was born again (John 3:3-8) and a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), his soul (or his real self) "wanted" to do the work God had planned for him to do (Ephesians 2:10), and he "didn't" want to have sinful thoughts, conversations, or actions. However, his flesh (or sinful nature) tried to encourage Paul to not do what God wanted him to do, and it wanted him to have sinful thoughts, conversations, and actions. Because of this, it was impossible for Paul to fight off every temptation to sin, but he still went to Heaven.

So, if a Christian doesn't sin on purpose (1 John 3:4,6,8,9,10), but they still sin (Romans 7:14-25), how does someone who has prayed or made a decision to become a Christian know if they are sinning on purpose?

To answer that, we need to look more into the Bible. King David and the sins he commited, is a good place to look. It is well known that David was one of the greatest persons in the Bible and is definitely in Heaven. However, he commited adultry with a man's wife and had the same man put on the front lines of battle so he would get killed. Obviously, he later doubted that he was going to Heaven. He proved this in Psalm 51:12 when he said, "Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit." Like David, Christians who have sinned on purpose do not feel like they are really a Christian. They literally lose their joy like David did in Psalm 51:12. David didn't just commit one sin, he fell into a season of sin. First David lusted over Bathsheba, which led to him commiting adultry, being jealous, plotting, and ultimately ended in a man's death. Even though David sinned on purpose, God forgave Him. If you read Psalm 51, you will see that David was very sorry for the series of sins he commited and asked God to forgive him. We know that God forgave him because Psalm 51:17 says, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." A very similar series of instances was when Peter denied that he knew Jesus three times and the events that happened after that. It is also helpful to note that David and Peter didn't commit those sins again.

In conclusion, a Christian can sin on purpose, but they will feel bad about it and try to not say, think, do, or desire it again. Although, there are differences -

1. People pray or make a decision to become a Christian, but they say things such as, "Well, I prayed to become a Christian, so that means I can commit any sins that I want to commit and still go to Heaven."

2. People have the idea that they will pray or make a decision to become a Christian, but they know that they are going to continue sinning the same way they have their whole life without trying to stop.

3. People pray or make a decision to become a Christian, but they believe that they can sin on purpose, and after they have commited a sin, they can ask God to forgive them and He will.

These ways of thinking are incorrect - Hebrews 10:26 says, "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins," Therefore, these people need to truly repent of their sins and receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. If you have prayed or made a decision to become a Christian, but you are not sure that you are really a Christian (Hebrews 11:6, Matthew 21:18-22, 1 John 5:14, and Hebrews 11:1), you need to be sure - please follow this website - http://chriswaug5.wix.com/howtogotoheaven
