In continuation of the previous messages, people chosen by God to be Christians become Christians automatically through faith in Jesus sometime in their lives, even if they don't tell God that they are willing to repent and begin following Jesus after they believe that Jesus is their Savior (They don't always need to do this because their hearts are prepared to receive Jesus, explained in the online book at the top of this page.)
But, it's possible for people to do this and try their best to follow Jesus throughout their lives and not go to heaven when they die. The reason for this is that they weren't chosen by God to be Christians. The entire chapter 9 of Romans is needed to understand this, but we will begin with Romans 9:30-33, "30What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. 31But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; 33As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed."
