What Is Lust? 3

This is a continuation of July 3rd and July 24th messages:

King David commited adultry before he commited adultry. Second Samuel 11:2-5 records, "2And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. 3And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? 4And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. 5And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child."

Before David physically commited adultry, he had the "desire" to do so and planned when he would do it. This was a sin, and Jesus explained this type of sin in Matthew 5:27-28.

1 Thessalonains 4:3-8

3For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 5Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: 6That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. 7For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. 8He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

The theme of these verses is fornication (sex before marriage). Verses four and five teach that Christians should try not to have desires (which is lust) to have sexual relations before marriage. I don't suggest that people have sexual thoughts, but there's a difference in physically wanting to have sexual relations before marriage and having sexual thoughts that you know you would never try to physically act out. The word 'uncleanness' in verse seven is referring to wanting to physically have sexual relations before marriage.

James 4:1-6

1From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

When someone lusts, they want to have what doesn't belong to them. We shouldn't physically want (lust) to have sexual relations before marriage.

Jeremiah 13:27

I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings (lustful sexual desires), the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?

Adulteries and whoredom are sins, and physically wanting to do those things with someone you aren't married to (neighings) is also sinful.

1 Corinthians 7:8-9

8I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. 9But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

If a Christian is unable to function because they can't quit wanting to physically have sexual relations (burning with lust), they should seek to become married.
