Gain What You Can Not Lose

Billy Graham wasn't shy about sharing what he learned from others, and this wisdom really made his sermons more valuable. A particular instance was when he quoted, "Give what you can not keep to gain what you can not lose."

This quote explains Matthew 16:25, "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it." When taken into context with surrounding verses, this means that someone will find their life (go to heaven) if they are willing to give up their sinful lifestyle and begin to live for Jesus (live a lifestyle similar to the one explained in chapter 39 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com) after they accept Him as their Savior.

Obviously, a person needs to believe that Jesus is their Savior in order to become a Christian, and they don't become a Christian when they obey Matthew 16:25. Although, if you read chapters 1-9 of this book - www.areyousureyouaresaved.com you will see that if someone is willing to give up their sinful lifestyle and begin to live for Jesus after they believe Jesus is their Savior, their heart is prepared to receive Him and, they are ready to become a Christian. Those who were present when Jesus delivered His words in Matthew 16:25 and weren't willing to live that way, ultimately turned away from Jesus like the thousands who counted the cost and realized that Jesus wasn't for them.
