Forgiving Others

Not forgiving people who offended, physically abused, talked bad about, and made fun of us, etc. is something Christians shouldn't do.

Luke 17:1 states, "Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!" Jesus is teaching that it's impossible for someone to go their whole life and not have someone mistreat them.

Therefore, since this has or will happen, we need to be prepared to forgive. The Bible teaches that we have to forgive others when they mistreat us, and it's found in the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:12 teaches us to pray, "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors."). Matthew 6:14-15 add, "14For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." One way someone can know if they have become a Christian after they accept Jesus as their Savior is if they are able to forgive those who have mistreated them. Unlike God who totally forgets someone's sins after they become a Christian (Isaiah 43:25 says, "I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins." Revelation 1:5 also adds, "And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,”), we aren't able to totally forget how others have mistreated us, but over time, a Christian should be able to stop continually and bitterly thinking about how people mistreated them. When this doesn't happen, hatered develops in our minds, and we literally "show" hatred towards them by our actions.

So, how can Christians avoid this from happening. The following paragraph explains how:

People could verbally abuse and say horrible things about you to others, but that would be a perfect opportunity for you to please God by obeying the Bible and try to imitate the Lord Jesus Christ (your hero and the One who died so you can live in heaven for eternity) by being happy and thankful to God when your enemy or anyone else is rude and mistreats you (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). The devil wants you to get angry and think bad thoughts about the people who are rude to you, but that would be an opportunity to defeat him and glorify God. Also, you will have one way of knowing that you are truly saved if you live this way (Matthew 5:45), and since these people are giving you these opportunities, you can develop a major love for them. God is using these people to make you a stronger Christian. Instead of labeling these people as your enemies, you can recognize them as people who are giving you assurance of your salvation. Believe me, a big weight was lifted off my shoulders when the Lord helped me realize this! So, these are huge reasons to be glad when others mistreat you and you face trials (James 1:2-4).
